Amailee Morales set a new Northern Colorado softball record for career doubles on Saturday, reaching 45 and surpassing the previous mark of 44. The achievement came during the Bears’ opening-weekend games at Smith Field in Los Angeles, where they faced Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount University (LMU).
In the first game, Northern Colorado was defeated by Long Beach State 10-4. Both teams recorded 10 hits, but Long Beach State pulled ahead with multi-run innings early in the contest. KK Christie tied the game in the second inning with a solo home run before Long Beach State built a significant lead. Morales contributed offensively with two doubles and an RBI.
The Bears fell to LMU 7-3 in their second game of the day. LMU took an early lead with a solo home run and added four runs in the second inning. Katie Thomson’s triple put Northern Colorado on the scoreboard in the fourth, while Ella Gonzales and Ava Arenz each drove in runs later in the game. Ellyse Hydock pitched five innings of relief, allowing only two runs over that span.
Morales now leads Northern Colorado’s all-time records not only in doubles but also ranks first in home runs (29) and walks (86). She is second all-time in RBIs (120), just two shy of tying for first place, eleventh in hits (145), fourth in total bases (281), and sixth in putouts (597). Teammate Ella Gonzales continues to advance on several program charts as well.
Northern Colorado will conclude its trip to Los Angeles with a matchup against UC Riverside at Easton Stadium on Sunday morning.
