Northern Colorado completed competition at the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 16, highlighted by a conference title and several podium placements.
The results matter for the university’s track and field program as they reflect both individual achievements and team progress in a major collegiate event. Strong performances can lead to further postseason opportunities for qualifying athletes.
Alexia Austin led Northern Colorado by winning the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.35 seconds, securing the Big Sky title and adding to her status as the program record holder in that event. Tyler Rogers earned second place in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.38 meters, contributing eight points to the team’s total. Kiana Van Haaren also took second place in the women’s long jump, recording a distance of 5.90 meters.
On the track, Monique Stewart finished among Northern Colorado’s all-time top five with her performance in the women’s 800-meter final, clocking in at 2:07.42 after advancing through preliminaries with one of the fastest times in school history. Raphael Egbuchilem scored points for Northern Colorado by competing in both men’s sprint finals—the 400 meters and 200 meters—demonstrating versatility across events.
In hurdles competition, Daniel Beckford and Jaydon Sundbye represented Northern Colorado in the men’s 110-meter hurdle finals after advancing from earlier rounds. Regina Mpigachai competed consistently throughout championship weekend and reached the women’s 1500-meter final.
April Necaise contributed to team efforts by participating in field events such as high jump on behalf of Northern Colorado.
Looking ahead, qualifying athletes from Northern Colorado will prepare for upcoming regional competitions as part of their postseason schedule.
