Northern Colorado Bears softball lost a closely contested game to Portland State, 4–3, on April 18 at Hillsboro Stadium. The defeat allowed the Vikings to secure the series after both teams battled through a competitive matchup.
The outcome is significant as it impacts Northern Colorado’s standing in their conference and sets the tone for their upcoming games. Both teams showed determination, but Portland State managed to maintain their lead in the final innings.
Portland State scored first with a sacrifice bunt in the opening inning. Northern Colorado responded later when KK Christie scored on a throwing error in the third inning. In that same frame, both teams added runs, making it a one-run game. The Bears took their only lead of the day in the fourth inning after Baylie Kakallis hit a two-run home run that also brought Eva Peace across home plate.
However, Portland State answered quickly with Abby Carsley hitting a single that drove in two runs, putting them back ahead by one run at 4–3 by the end of the fourth inning. Despite efforts from Christie, Ella Gonzales, Emma Harrington, Krista Francia, and Kakallis—each recording hits—the Bears were limited offensively and finished with five total hits.
Anna Wilming started for Northern Colorado and was charged with four runs over five innings pitched. Grace Algrim closed out for the Bears without allowing any further runs or hits. Although Northern Colorado put runners on base late in both the sixth and seventh innings, they could not bring home another run as Portland State’s defense held firm.
Looking ahead, Northern Colorado will return home to face Nevada at Gloria Rodriguez Field on April 20 with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT.
