The Northern Colorado men’s basketball team was defeated by Denver, 86-79, on Saturday afternoon at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley. Senior forward Brock Wisne led Northern Colorado with 27 points, shooting 13-of-19 from the field. Ring Nyeri recorded his first career double-double, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, exchanging baskets throughout. The Bears relied on scoring in the paint and rebounding, while Denver’s perimeter shooting kept them competitive. The first half ended tied at 40 after Denver made a three-pointer just before halftime.
Northern Colorado built momentum early in the second half and achieved their largest lead at 66-55 with just over ten minutes left to play. However, Denver responded with effective shooting and transition play to close the gap. The Pioneers tied the game at 72 with a little over five minutes remaining and took control late through key baskets and free throws.
Nyeri brought Northern Colorado within two points at 81-79 with under ninety seconds left, but Denver scored on their next possession and secured the win from the free-throw line in the closing moments.
Vincent Delano contributed 11 points for Northern Colorado, while Ariik Mawien added 13 points along with six rebounds and two assists. Despite holding advantages in points in the paint (58-40) and second-chance points (14-5), Northern Colorado could not overcome Denver’s efficiency; Denver shot over fifty-two percent from the field, made eight of fifteen three-point attempts, and converted eighteen of twenty free throws. The contest included seventeen ties and five lead changes.
The Bears will have a short break before facing Colorado on December 28 at CU Events Center. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. MST, with coverage available on ESPN+ and PirateRadio935.com.
