Northern Colorado men’s basketball has announced the signing of two in-state recruits, Jeremiah Hammond and Drew Paine, to its 2026 class. The announcement was made by head coach Steve Smiley on National Signing Day.
Jeremiah Hammond is a 6’3″ guard from Denver who has played at Cherry Creek, competed on the Nike EYCL circuit with Pluto Prospects, and currently attends Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Florida. He is recognized for his playmaking and scoring abilities, as well as his versatility in the backcourt.
Smiley highlighted Hammond’s background and potential: “Jeremiah is an extremely talented guard that can play multiple positions,” Smiley said. “He can use ball screens to create for himself or others, and he has the knack to score at an extremely high level. A great kid from a great family, we can’t wait to get him to UNC.”
Hammond credited the coaching staff for their support: “The coaching staff took a chance on me and believed in me,” he said. “They want to build me not just as a player, but as a person as well.”
Trey Harris, director of Pluto Prospects, commented on Hammond’s qualities: “Jeremiah’s leadership sets him apart,” said Trey Harris, PLUTO Prospects Director. “He’s one of the most complete players we’ve had—high IQ, long, and able to score from all three levels.”
Drew Paine is a 6’8″ forward/center from Highlands Ranch who plays for ThunderRidge High School. He earned First Team All-Continental League and Second Team 6A All-State honors while helping his team reach the state championship game as a sophomore.
Smiley described Paine as integral to UNC’s future plans: “Drew is extremely skilled and can play both inside and on the perimeter,” Smiley said. “He can connect our offense in so many ways. He’s a proven winner and an elite human being who will thrive in our community.”
Paine expressed enthusiasm about joining UNC: “I felt like I fit in from both a school and sports perspective,” he said.
ThunderRidge head coach Joe Ortiz spoke highly of Paine’s skills: “DP is one of the most dynamic and versatile players I’ve ever coached,” said ThunderRidge head coach Joe Ortiz.
Mountain Stars Director Steve Grabowski added: “The Bears are getting not only one of the most skilled bigs in Colorado, but in the country. UNC fans are going to love him.”
