Northern Colorado lost both games of a doubleheader against Saint Mary’s on March 21 at Gloria Rodriguez Field, with final scores of 12-4 and 9-4.
The results mark a setback for the Bears as they prepare for the start of Big Sky Conference play. The team showed determination at the plate but was unable to overcome early deficits in either game.
In the first game, Northern Colorado took an early lead when Ella Gonzales doubled to score KK Christie. However, Saint Mary’s responded with four runs in the second inning and added four more in the third. Hayden Nelson hit a three-run home run for Northern Colorado in the third inning, narrowing the gap to 8-4, but Saint Mary’s continued to add runs throughout the game. Gonzales led with two hits and an RBI, while Nelson drove in three runs.
During game two, Saint Mary’s again started strong with a four-run first inning. The Bears answered in the second inning as Ava Arenz drove in a run and Christie hit a bases-clearing triple to tie it at 4-4. Despite this effort, Saint Mary’s regained control and secured victory by adding runs in later innings. Christie finished with three RBIs, while Arenz contributed one RBI. Multiple players recorded hits as Northern Colorado totaled eight hits in the second game.
Looking ahead, Northern Colorado will open Big Sky Conference play by hosting Sacramento State for a three-game series at Gloria Rodriguez Field next weekend.
The program also highlighted its Rally Starters Club initiative, which supports enhanced training resources and travel opportunities for student-athletes.
