Northern Colorado baseball won an 8-7 game against St. Thomas on Apr. 18, setting a new record for the longest contest in Summit League history by playing 21 innings.
The extended matchup drew attention as both teams struggled to break the tie through nine extra innings, highlighting the competitive nature of the series opener and Northern Colorado’s resilience.
St. Thomas took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Northern Colorado responded with key hits from Jaden Stone and Logan Pruski to keep pace, tying the score multiple times until it was locked at 5-5 after nine innings. Pitchers from both teams held their opponents scoreless for nine consecutive extra innings before St. Thomas scored in the top of the nineteenth inning.
Northern Colorado quickly answered when Jake Bullard drove in a run to tie it again, followed by Brandon Sanchez’s RBI single that gave them a brief lead. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the twenty-first inning when Northern Colorado scored on a walk-off balk to secure victory. Logan Borboa pitched the final 2.1 innings and earned credit for the win, while Stone led all hitters with four hits and Pruski contributed three hits and two RBIs.
Due to darkness, officials suspended game two of the series with Northern Colorado trailing St. Thomas 11-3 at the top of ninth inning; play is scheduled to resume Sunday.
The outcome sets a milestone for both programs and underscores Northern Colorado’s ability to compete through challenging circumstances.
