The University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball team has announced the addition of Lucy Mead to its roster. Mead, who is from Sydney, Australia, will join the Bears as a wing/forward.

Head Coach Kristen Mattio commented on the new signing: “Our focus in this recruiting class was to identify players who bring versatility, play making ability, and a competitive spirit to complement both our current roster and the future of UNC Women’s Basketball. This group truly represents the epitome of the student-athlete — high-character young women who are class acts in every sense. Their work ethic, self-motivation, and team-first mentality will serve our program well both on and off the court. As with every recruiting class, I am extremely proud when a young woman chooses to become a Bear and embrace the opportunity to grow here at the University of Northern Colorado.”

Mead comes with experience at both state and national levels. She won New South Wales State Team Gold Medals in 2022, 2024, and 2025. In 2024, she served as co-captain for the U18 NSW State Team and previously represented Australia at the U15 level.

Coach Mattio also described what Mead brings to the team: “We are so excited to get Lucy Mead’s commitment to UNC! Lucy is a dynamic 6’2″ guard/forward who brings outstanding length and size at her position. She has the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim, while also stretching the defense with her perimeter shooting. Lucy will also bring a tough nosed, defensive grit, and versatility to our program. She fits perfectly into our fast-paced style of play and can be a real threat in the open court — whether it’s getting to the rim in transition or knocking down the open three. Lucy is a winner — she plays with poise, confidence, and a competitive edge that embodies what we value in our program. She is a great fit for our team, university, and the Greeley community. Lucy continues to elevate her game through hard work and determination, and we believe her best basketball is still ahead of her. Bear Country is going to love watching Lucy Mead in Blue and Gold!”

Mead said she chose Northern Colorado because she felt an immediate connection with both teammates and coaching staff as well as appreciation for what she described as a strong family-oriented culture within the program.
