Northern Colorado women’s basketball ended its non-conference schedule with a 65–56 loss to Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas, on Monday. The Bears kept the game close through three quarters but were unable to hold off the Bearkats in the final period.
The opening quarter saw both teams struggle offensively, with limited movement and contested shots. Northern Colorado took control early by focusing on rebounding and defense, which resulted in several forced turnovers. Their efforts gave them a 14–9 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Northern Colorado maintained defensive pressure and held a narrow lead at the media timeout. Heather Baymon came off the bench to lead her team with 12 points on perfect shooting in the first half. The Bears entered halftime ahead 27–21.
After halftime, Sam Houston closed the gap quickly in the third quarter. Gabi Fields made a key three-pointer to stop a Bearkat run, while Tatum West contributed seven rebounds before leaving due to foul trouble. Despite these efforts, Sam Houston’s aggressive play led to free throws that helped them reduce Northern Colorado’s advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Northern Colorado attacked offensively and earned trips to the free-throw line but could not maintain their lead as Sam Houston pulled ahead late in the game. A late rally by Northern Colorado was not enough as Sam Houston secured victory.
Northern Colorado’s bench outscored Sam Houston’s reserves 24–7 over four quarters.
The Bears will now take a short break for Christmas before beginning Big Sky Conference play against Montana State at home on January 1 at 6 p.m. MT.
