Northern Colorado distance runner Regina Mpigachai has been chosen to represent Tanzania at the upcoming World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for January 10 in Tallahassee, Florida. This selection marks a significant achievement for both Mpigachai and the Northern Colorado Bears’ track and field and cross country program.

Mpigachai is only the second athlete from Northern Colorado to be selected for a World Championships event. She follows former teammate Jerome Campbell, who previously competed at the World Indoor Championships representing his country.

During her time with Northern Colorado, Mpigachai has become one of the most accomplished distance runners in program history. Her achievements include competing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, earning All-Region honors, and setting several program records in both cross country and track events.

Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Wayne Angel commented on her accomplishment: “This selection is a testament to Regina’s commitment, consistency, and belief in the process. Regina came to Northern Colorado, believed in the process, and stayed true to her Bear family. Over the course of her career, she made history; NCAA Cross Country finalist, All-Region, record-setting All-Big Sky Team, and now a representative of Tanzania on the world’s greatest stage. We are all immensely proud of her. This is what loyalty looks like. This is what development looks like. And this is what happens when trust meets talent. Northern Colorado didn’t just help shape an athlete, we watched one rise to the pinnacle of her sport.”

Mpigachai’s participation highlights Northern Colorado’s growing presence internationally and underscores its focus on long-term athlete development.

She will compete against top distance runners from around the world when she represents Tanzania at this year’s championships in Tallahassee.
