Weld County issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.
A history-making season for the Eaton Reds softball team is now officially part of Weld County’s history. Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Monday, November 2, 2020, Eaton Reds Day in Weld County, honoring the Reds’ first softball championship in school history!
After falling short in the championship game in 2015 and 2018, the Reds defeated Lutheran 5-1 on October 10 to win the Class 3A state championship. The victory showed, among other traits, the team’s perseverance in a year with many challenges.
“It was a heck of a year,” Eaton coach Dale Hughes told the board during the presentation. “Dealing with COVID and all the distractions that were presented to us, I thought we did an outstanding job.”
Following the proclamation, team members introduced themselves, identified their positions and each board member commended the team on their hard work and determination in capturing a state championship. While the championship season is special to the softball team, its impact extends to the entire RE-2 community.
“What an outstanding job each and every one of you did on the softball field and in your community,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner and former mayor of Eaton. “Your community is very proud of you. We’re excited about the amazing season you had. You get to add this first-ever state softball championship to a huge trophy case. Congratulations!”
