WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo, M.D. (CO-08) on May 31 released the following statement after casting her vote for the Bipartisan Budget Agreement, which responsibly raises the debt limit and helps avoid catastrophic default.
“A basic duty of Congress is to pay our country’s bills. Failing to do so would cause an economic catastrophe that would most hurt working-class families like the ones I represent. I’m glad Speaker McCarthy backed away from his political brinkmanship and agreed to raise the debt ceiling – as Congresses under the leadership of both parties have done in the past. I’m disappointed to see the most vulnerable families scapegoated in this deal, which includes some cuts to vital programs like SNAP. Many of the families I treated as a pediatrician in our community relied on these nutrition programs to feed their families. I’ve seen firsthand the importance of these benefits for growing kids and families. After joining my colleagues today to do the responsible thing by voting to raise the debt ceiling, I will continue to use my position on the House Agriculture Committee to advocate for the hardworking families in my District who rely on these nutrition benefits.”
