The University of Northern Colorado Athletics Department announced on May 4 that it will begin a national search for a new Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, following the decision by current head coach Wayne Angel to retire after the Big Sky Conference Championships.
The announcement marks the end of Angel’s seven-year tenure at Northern Colorado. During his time with the Bears, he guided student-athletes to four All-American honors and 17 individual Big Sky titles. Notable achievements under his leadership include Jerome Campbell’s appearance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships and runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 2025, as well as Regina Mpigachai’s selection to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championship and her representation of Tanzania at the World Cross Country Championships.
Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said, “We wish Coach Angel well on his pending retirement and thank him for his service to UNC over the past seven years. We are committed to building a championship-caliber program that reflects our values as we begin the search process.”
Angel said, “I’ve decided to retire after the Big Sky Championships. This has been an incredibly meaningful experience, and I’m proud to what we’ve accomplished together. I am grateful for the opportunity and support from everyone involved and have full confidence that the team will continue to see success in the future.”
The university stated it will soon begin a comprehensive national search focused on candidates who demonstrate strong commitment to student-athlete success, competitive excellence, and program growth. Information about how candidates can apply will be released after approval by university officials.
